About this Discussion

In 2019, over 92 billion tonnes of materials were extracted and processed, contributing to about half of global CO2 emissions. This “take-make-dispose” approach and the resulting waste – including plastics, textiles, food, electronics and more – is taking its toll on the environment and human health.

A circular economy model replaces this end-of-life concept with restoration, shifts towards the use of renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals, which impair reuse and return to the biosphere, and aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems and business models. The circular economy approach improves resource efficiency and reduces environmental impact on natural capital by designing products in a more recyclable way, adopting efficient technology and turning waste into a resource. The circular economy offers a trillion-dollar opportunity in terms of possible material savings, innovation and job creation, improved land productivity and soil health, and green growth. Achieving this, however, requires strong collaboration between leaders from business, government and civil society.

Colleagues, we share more information about the environmental performance trend in Guatemala, based on the analysis of the results of 296 self-diagnoses carried out by companies with operations in Guatemala.

In the methodology defined to measure the level of environmental performance of companies, we have considered 35 aspects, organized into 7 sections. In this graph you can see the note (on a scale of 0 to 100 points) of each one of the aspects, the color of the bar is the performance ranking that has been established, being 5 levels.

Below is a description of each ranking defined at the moment. At the moment the graph is in Spanish.

Red Ranking - High risk due to legal non-compliance, economic losses and environmental impacts.

Orange and Yellow Ranking - Moderate risk, corrective approach, high cost reduction potential by prioritizing prevention.

Green Ranking - Low risk, optimization of resources, opportunity to extend the scope of environmental management.

Blue Ranking - Ranking focused on environmental prevention and resource efficiency, solid technical and strategic foundations to establish a route focused on the Circular Economy.

Dear friends, the Cleaner Production Center of Guatemala launched the Environmental Performance Program in 2018. With this program we are supporting companies to carry out self-diagnoses via the web to identify advances and other opportunities identified in included in the methodology. of analysis. DDA tool (Diagnostics of Environmental Performance in Spanish) facilitates formulas to carry out self-diagnoses, in a practical way, quickly in generating automatic reports determining the performance ranking. We have updated the data obtained from 296 auto diagnostics for Guatemala, I hope that in the month of October we will publish a report with more detail, at the moment I share a couple of graphs where you can see the most important data in a summarized way,
