About this Discussion

According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.

There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.

The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

GOOD NEWS! The world is now beginning to seriously amplify the removal of already emitted greenhouse gases. This is key to avert frequenting GHG emission induced intense disasters ravaging the entire world.

Drought emergency declared in northern Italy

I generally try to stay positive, especially on this platform: sharing solutions, good examples and insightful stories on how to transition to a more sustainable society.

However this is home to me, our big river is empty, glaciers are falling down and my heart is broken.

We'll be rationing water and yet Italy was pushing back stronger climate action during the EU Council (https://www.electrive.com/2022/06/29/eu-council-decides-on-100-co2-redu…)

When will we learn?

How to Increase Public Consciousness of Climate Change through Weather Forecasts

What about broadcasting the climate information through weather forecasts? The information includes climate facts, forecasts and tips. Facts are what have already happened. Forecasts are what will happen if we keep doing business as usual. Tips are what we can do to deal with the climate crisis. The following messages are some examples.

Today's climate fact is: “Global average temperatures have increased 1.1°C in the last few hundred years”.
Today's climate fact is: “The average global sea level rose by 20 centimeters between 1901 and 2018”.
Today's climate fact is: “Current extinction rates are 1,000 times higher than the natural rates of extinction”.
Today's climate forecast is: “Earth’s average temperature will increase to roughly 4.5°C above the pre-industrial levels by 2100”.
Today's climate forecast is: “Future extinction rates are likely to be 10,000 times higher than the natural rates of extinction”.
Today's climate forecast is: “Most of the world’s population will struggle for access to water by 2050”.
Today's climate tip is: “Less consumption, less destruction”.
Today's climate tip is: “More vegans, more virtue”.
Today's climate tip is: “Less cars, less carbon dioxide”.
Et cetera.

I suggest adding one of the climate messages to the beginning of any weather forecast. When the message is being broadcasted, some websites such as 'climatescience.org' should be shown on the screen in case the audience want to learn more about climate change.

*This idea was inspired by Clara Mottura who told me that people's inaction on climate change was due to their climate unconsciousness and disengagement. I hope broadcasting the climate information through weather forecasts will raise the public awareness of climate crisis and encourage people to take action on the global warming.

Food waste. Many of us believe this type of waste is not harmful to our environment. It is organic right? So, it will be absorbed by nature as many of us believe. Plastic waste, however, is harmful, and we should not pollute our environment with single-use plastic items. Much media attention is given to this plastic waste subject around the globe. But sending just 1kg of food waste to landfill, produces the same carbon emissions as landfilling a staggering 25,000 500ml plastic bottles.
When composing a waste management strategy, please take into account food waste.

Gender equality and climate action: five lessons from the Lancet

1. Address both sex differences and gender inequalities.

2. Focus on important things rather than everything.

3. Change systems, services, and individuals and communities.

4. Measure success in a consistent and meaningful way.

5. Engage with women as consumers, producers, and innovators rather than just as beneficiaries.
