What is Stockholm+50 and what is the purpose?
In 1972, countries from around the world gathered in Stockholm for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment around the motto “Only One Earth”. Five decades later, Stockholm will welcome the world again on 2 – 3 June 2022 for the Stockholm+50 international conference, hosted by Sweden and Kenya. The motto is ‘A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – our Responsibility, our Opportunity.’
We celebrate the watershed moment of the 1972 conference and reflect on the current situation, through addressing the intergenerational responsibility, focusing on the implementation opportunities, and recognizing interconnectivity between stakeholders and between policy issues. Stockholm+50 offers an opportunity for nations and stakeholders to collaborate, share expertise and address complex nexus issues for urgent actions and long-term system change.
What are the regional Multi-stakeholder Consultations and why should you join?
Stockholm+50 is an open forum where interested parties are invited to share their experiences and initiatives to help to rebuild trust and cooperation for a healthy planet. On the road to Stockholm+50 UNEP and UNDP are supporting consultations at the regional and national levels. The regional consultations are open to all major groups, the private sector, all government representatives, and other stakeholders (accredited or not accredited by UNEP/ECOSOC). A total of five regional consultations are organized, by UNEP with the support of GO4SDGs, to discuss regional specific topics, sectors and solutions.
You are invited to share your views towards a healthy planet and a sustainable recovery and bring to the table your commitments and pledges for action and implementation. You are also encouraged to actively engage in the working groups around relevant sectors and topics for your region. Stockholm+50 wants to inspire you, and all other actors, to find their unique place in a global system, in collaboration with others, to embrace new ideas and commit to a shared responsibility.
To which output of Stockholm+50 will you contribute?
The outcomes of the global and regional processes, including your contribution, will be brought into the thinking through 5 interconnected pathways; through reimagining the future; through regeneration of ecosystems; to address a green recovery; to rebalance resource use, and to support a renewed multilateralism. See the concept note on the Stockholm+50 website for more details. The outcomes of the regional consultations will be published on the same website.
